The northern emergency exit of the tunnel leading to the new station at the Köln Bonn Airport, seen on 12 October 2003. The tunnel is 4210 m long, with the station in the middle, so there is one emergency exit in the northern part and one in the southern (as new tunnels must have exits at least every 1000 m). Note the door with the air intake, the exit itself will be kept at a higher pressure than the tunnel, so that smoke from the tunnel can not enter the staircase. At this day the tunnel was open to visitors, you could walk from this exit to the station through the tunnel. Scheduled operation is planned to start in June 2004.
