The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne
(ABS 4)
seen from near the building on 6 March 2002. Track 1 and parts of the platform
are being rebuilt. On the left is the old turntable, on the right is the
platform between track 3 and 5 and behind it the new platform for the S-Bahn
(urban trains).

seen on 6 March 2002. The new platform for the S-Bahn (urban trains) and it's
roof are under construction. Also visible is the staircase in the middle and
the elevator on the right. On the left is the old track 5 with the temporary
bridge above the pedestrian tunnel.

(ABS 4)
seen on 6 April 2002. The platform next to track 5 is being built up new.
Obviously this will be the eastern end in the future, so the platform will be
shorter.

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne
(ABS 4)
seen looking towards west along track 3 on 27 April 2002. Behind the switch,
track 2 is removed to be built up new. The part of track 2 inside the station
visible on the right is connected to track 1 in the background and used for
trains towards Aachen, note the green exit signal at the right edge. In the new
part of track 2 there will be connections to track 1 and to the tracks on the
south side (left). Between track 2 and the house is the single tracked line to
Heimbach, a Regiosprinter of the Dürener Kreisbahn (DKB) is approaching
from there.

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne
(ABS 4)
seen looking towards west along track 3 on 29 April 2002. Behind the switch,
track 2 was built up new. It seems that the connection to the tracks on the
south side (left) was not finally aligned yet. The part of track 2 inside the
station visible on the right is connected to track 1 in the background and used
for trains towards Aachen, note the exit signal at the right edge.

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne
(ABS 4)
seen looking towards west from RB 11535 just departing from track 3 (left). In
the center is the new track 2, which is connected to track 1 at the ends of the
station. A temporary platform is under construction. I guess it will be used
only for a short time, later it will be removed to allow the reconstruction of
track 1. On the left is a Lf3 board (with the "E") marking the end of a
temporary speed limit.

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne
(ABS 4)
seen looking towards east along track 22 (left) on 22 May 2002. Because of the
construction works, the access for wheelchairs at the western end of the
platform between track 3 and 5 is currently unusable. This way leads to a new
access at the eastern end of the platform.

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne
(ABS 4)
seen looking towards south from the platform of track 1 on 22 May 2002. The
platform between track 3 and 5 has been removed west of the staircase (left). I
guess that an elevator will be constructed in this area, connecting the
platform with the pedestrian tunnel. In the background is a new platform with
a staircase on the left and an elevator on the right.

(ABS 4)
seen from the platform between track 3 and 5 on 31 May 2002. On the side of
track 5, the platform was broken up to be rebuilt. At the new platform on the
left, the trackbed for track 6 is prepared. At this time track 6 joins track 5
at the switch visible in the foreground, in the future it will run along the
new platform.

(ABS 4)
seen looking towards east on 21 June 2002. The temporary extension of the
platform at track 6 is just being extended some more. There also is an
extension at track 5 on the left. Three new signals are visible, they are still
marked as invalid by the white crosses. At the left edge of the picture is the
old signalbox.

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne
(ABS 4)
seen from the platform between the tracks 3 and 5 on 28 June 2002. At the new
platform at track 6 the building for the elevator was errected. Unfortunately
it is not made of a transparent material, what would have looked much better in
my opinion.

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne
(ABS 4)
seen looking towards east along the new platform of track 1 on 13 August 2002.
Note that the area where one should not be when a train is passing is marked
with a narrow white line just right of the columns. The wider white line
normally used for this purpose is further left. With it's special surface it is
also intended to guide blind people along the platform, so it makes no sense to
let is pass the columns too nearly.

(ABS 4)
seen looking towards east along the new platform of track 1 on 13 August 2002.
In this area east of the platform roof the wide white line is nearer at the
edge. Note that the distance is still bigger than on most of the platforms. The
reason is that the trains will pass here with 200 km/h when the line is fully
upgraded.

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne
(ABS 4)
seen looking towards west from the platform of track 6 on 15 August 2002. At
the old staircase between track 3 and 5 the roof and the walls were removed. In
the future the whole western part of the platform will be covered by a roof.
Behind the staircase a new elevator is prepared. At track 5, the platform will
be continued by a lower part for the trains to Heimbach, note that the signals
(the old one and a new one that will replace it) are very far away.

(ABS 4)

The roof seems to be finished. Track 6 is on the right, the track on the left
does not have a number yet as the old signalbox does not "know" it. It will be
called track 6 when the new signalbox goes into service, some track numbers
will be shifted then.

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne
(ABS 4)
seen from the south side on 19 December 2002. The rebuilt platform between
track 3 and 4 (left) and the new platform between track 5 and 6 (right) are
visible. On the left in the background is the station building with the
platform of track 1 (not visible) next to it. The platform of track 4 (formerly
known as track 5) has a low section at this end for the RegioSprinters of the
Dürener Kreisbahn (DKB). Track 5 (track 6 in the past) is used for the
S-Bahn (urban trains) towards Cologne, a train is waiting there. Next to track
6 is track 7 without a platform. The building at the right edge of the picture
is the new electronic signalbox (elektronisches Stellwerk, ESTW). When it was
taken into service (on 24 November 2002), some of the track numbers were
changed.
