Dresden-Mitte, 2001-10-10. From street level, it is hard to see
that this is a station - before the second world war it was very
prominent with an arched steel and glass hall.

Dresden-Mitte. This station once had a big glass roof similar to
Hamburg-Dammtor or Berlin-Alexanderplatz; in the second world war,
the roof was damaged and was later removed almost completely. One
of the pillars, which also served as an exhaust stack for the old
heating system (now out of service), remains as the only reminder
of the old hall. October 2001.

Dresden-Mitte. The waiting rooms on the platforms look not very
inviting. Only one platform is currently in use; the tracks for
the other platform (on the right) have been removed in preparation
of the rebuilding of this station. October 2001.

Dresden-Mitte, October 2001. The entrance hall is currently not
accessible; a provisional entrance from the backside has been
opened so that the platform can be accessed. During the rebuilding,
the station looks a bit like an archaeological excavation site.

Dresden-Mitte, October 2001. This was once the location of the
ticket counters - closed since long. The trackbed above has been
removed, so this is currently open air.

Dresden-Mitte, October 2001. Some of the outer walls were decorated
with paintings, such as this one of the Zwinger - but even these are
torn down.

Dresden-Mitte, October 2001. This once was the main entrance to the
station; during the rebuilding it is closed, and passengers have to
walk through an underpass to the rear entrance.

Dresden-Mitte, October 2001. The "rear side" of the station (facing
away from the city), with the temporary entrance. This was originally
the location of the waiting rooms, separated for first/second and
third/fourth class. You can see the last remaining pillar of the old
roof.

The spacious but empty entrance hall of the station Dresden-Mitte.
Originally, this station had ticket counters, a restaurant,
luggage services and a nice big roof above the tracks, but the
roof was damaged in the second world war and soon removed
completely and counters were closed, so this is what remains:
an unmanned stop with two platforms, ticket machines and a drink
dispenser (only local trains stop here). At least you have plenty
of space to store bicycles well-protected from the rain. But there
are some plans for rebuilding this station and making it a bit
more inviting. 2001-05-11.

August 2012 entstanden.
