Dresden Leipziger Bahnhof. End station of the first German long distance
railway (Leipzig - Dresden). These buildings date from the second half of
the 19th century; at the beginning of the 20th century this station was
replaced by the new station Dresden-Neustadt. Since then it is used as a
freight station, and most of the old buildings are deteriorating.

in the background you see the station Dresden-Neustadt which replaced this
station (and allowed to cross the river Elbe).

A view of the Leipziger Bahnhof in Dresden - before the station
Dresden-Neustadt was completed a hundred years ago, this was an
important passenger station. You can see the "Eilgutausgabe"
(express goods office) on the right. Today this is a mostly unused
goods station (Dresden-Neustadt Gbf). 2001-05-12.

This building was built in 1857 by the Leipzig-Dresdener
Eisenbahn as "departure hall" of the station Leipziger
Bahnhof. In 1901 with the opening of the new station
Dresden-Neustadt this station was closed for passenger
traffic and used for freight trains since then. Today only
a part of the building remains, mostly in ruins. 2001-07-29
