In Linnich, the end of the DKB line is marked by a semaphore in a permanent "halt" position. Some freight wagons are stored on the rest of the track, then soon there's nothing more. There once was a line towards Baal - Ratheim - Dalheim, but it has been removed. There are discussions about reactivation but no plans for the immediate future. 2010-06-07. |

A German semaphore main signal in combination with a semaphore approach signal. The main signal is the red/white one, the approach signal is the yellow/white one in front (and it of course relates to the next signal, which isn't in the picture). Both signals are of the three-aspect variety (proceed/proceed at restricted speed/stop) and show "stop"/"stop at next signal" here.

A main signal and a distant signal of the
semaphore
system at the left track in Aachen Rothe-Erde. These semaphores were
newly(!) errected in march 2001 to allow bidirectional operation to Stolberg.
They are no more marked as invalid, but note that the distant signal has no
post plate. I'm not shure if bidirectional operation is already in use by now.
In order not to be covered by the roof, the signals were placed on the left. In
the background the mechanical signalbox can be seen.

July 2001. D 423 (Oostende-Cologne) has just passed. Note that the distant
signal is at reduced distance to the next main signal, for that a triangle is
placed on it's post plate.

While Dresden Hbf has new "Ks" light signals since 2000, Dresden-Neustadt
still has the old semaphore signals like many decades ago. The signal in
front is showing Hp2 (proceed at 40 km/h), the signals in the background
show Hp0 (stop).

This combination of semaphore signal and water crane was a common sight in
German stations a long time ago, but is now becoming increasingly rare. In
Dresden-Neustadt you can still see it. The signal is showing Hp0 (stop),
the orange triangle with the "1" signifies a 10 km/h speed restriction in
the track straight ahead (after the next turnout). The water crane is
still functional and regularly used for special steam trains.

The semaphore signals U (right) and V (left) at the station Rothe Erde in Aachen
seen from the platform on 1 May 2007. They are intermediate signals, placed
between the entrance signals (which also server as exit signals of Aachen Hbf in
this case) and the exit signals in the direction towards Cologne. Track 2
on the left is the through track for trains towards Cologne. The right track
(probably known as track 3) is rarely used by train movements normally, it
is predominantly used by shunting movements running between Rothe Erde and Hbf.
During the next months this track should gain a lot of passenger train
movements, as the refurbishment of the island platform will force trains towards
Cologne to use a temporary platform at this track. Unlike V, the signal U has no
distant signal next to it to announce the exit signal. Also I think that it can
just show Hp2 (proceed with restriction to 40 km/h), but not Hp1 (proceed
without speed restriction). Thus using this track ought slow down operations.
Note that the shunting signal next to the signal U is set to Sh1 (clear),
although no shunting movement was about to pass by. This is sometimes to be
observed at mechanical signalboxes, where the shunting signals do not change
back to Sh0 (stop) automatically when the shunting movement has passed. These
semaphores will disappear in some months, the new cable channels already
announce the construction of a new electronic signalbox.

A main signal of the
semaphore
system seen at Heimbach (Eifel) on 26 September 2002. Please note that an M
board is attached at the bottom, which means that the signal may be passed with
a verbal permission of the signalman when it shows stop. The signal is at the
dead end of the station, so it is normally only passed by shunting movements.
Also I think it is not possible to set this semaphore to clear, as all signals
normally needed for train movements on that line are new light signals.
