In the course of modernisation of the railway line from Kiel to Luebeck new automatic level crossing barriers were installed on two streets in the town of Preetz. Deutsche Bahn, however, had forgotten to apply for approval of the equipment used from the authorities before installation. Hence for many weeks railway workers had to manually install barriers across the street before each train passed. 2004 J. C. Stiller (stiller_the_at_symbol_brain.uni-freiburg.de) |

The level crossing in Buir on the upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
seen from the south side on 13 August 2002. All trains use the new highspeed
tracks in the background at this time. In the foreground the tracks for the
S-Bahn (urban trains) are under construction, for this reason the crossing is
closed for cars for some weeks. For pedestrians and bikers a temporary path
passes the building site. Note that only two of the four barriers are opened.
The southern barriers used to be further south in the past, when the trains
used the old tracks located where now the S-Bahn is built. If the level
crossing is still in service when the S-Bahn starts, it will be neccessary to
move them back.

Temporary level crossing near Sindorf on the upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
seen on 8 August 2001. The first and the third track are in service for some
months, the second was just built, so an access to the building site between
the tracks was needed. In the background is a new transformer station.

19 Jan 2001, Fichtenberg, Germany La 2 fuer Bahnübergang. Die Fahrzeit des Zuges verlägert sich hierdurch um ziemlich exakt eine Minute. Speed restriction to 20km/h (yellow triangles) for a level crossing. Timing the train I found that this causes an increase in travel time of pretty exacly one minute.

Speed restriction to 20km/h for this level crossing. Timing the train I found that this causes an increase in travel time of pretty exacly one minute. The problem, according to federal administration, is the possibility of long vehicles wanting to turn left into the timber storage area which might get stopped by oncoming traffic and thus fouwling the level crossing.

In the small village of Olef, the Oleftalbahn Kall-Hellenthal runs across the
village square. Two men have to walk in front of the train to warn the traffic.
The line is served only on sundays in summer. The picture was taken through the
front window of RegioSprinter 6.001.1 of the Rurtalbahn, running towards Kall on
9 October 2005.

A radar scanner at the Freimersdorfer Weg level crossing in Cologne, located at
the northern end of the former station Bocklemünd (on the line to
Mönchengladbach), seen on 11 December 2004. In the foreground is the
Scanner itself, located at one corner of the crossing. At the three other
corners radar reflectors are placed (one visible in the background), which are
used for a self test of the device. Radar scanners are a relatively new
possibility to check if the crossing is free, by now this is normally done by
someone watching the crossing directly or by video. At least in Germany each
crossing with full barriers has to be checked if it is free after the barriers
were lowered. As this area is now controled from a central signalbox in
Duisburg, it is a big advantage that the check is automatic.

three corners of the crossing, while at the fourth is the radar scanner itself,

rectangular corner of three panels, which reflects the radar beam right back
into the direction where it came from, and a cover. In the background you can
see the block signals which covers the crossing from trains coming from
Mönchengladbach. The signals can not be set to the proceed aspect until
the barriers are down and the radar scanner has reported that the crossing is
free.
