Compared with common railway-dimensions a sweet little toy: A gravel-car for small maintenance engines. Empty weight: 3,8 metric tons. Load maximum: 8 metric tons. Maximum speed: 20 km/h. Without viewable road-number. Owned by Köngleis. Duisburg-Kasslerfeld on 1st of February 2003.

Plasser & Theurer 09-32 CSM ballast tamper of Kölngleis working in the
area of the station Buir (on Cologne-Aachen) on 5 September 2001. There are
four pairs of tamping arms on each side, so in each step two sleepers can be
processed. The tamping device is shiftable lengthwards against the main frame,
so the machine itself moves continously (from right to left) while working.

left which are used to lift the rails.

The tamping device of the Duomatic 08-32 of Kölngleis seen in Aachen West
on 19 October 2001. There are four pairs of tamping arms on each side, so two
sleepers can be processed in one step. On the left is a device with horizontal
wheels to lift the rails. Above it the work direction (Arbeitsrichtung) is
marked with a blue arrow.

A Plasser & Theurer 08-475 Unimat 4 S ballast tamper of Kölngleis is
shunting in Aachen West on 12 July 2001. This machine is rather big, consisting
of a four-axled and a two-axled section.

The rear end of the 08-475 Unimat 4 S ballast tamper, seen in Aachen West on 12
July 2001. The tamping device and the operator cab can be seen on the righthand
side. The devices under the two-axled section seem to be intended to reshape
the trackbed after tamping.

12 July 2001. From left to right, the tamping device and the operator cab are
followed by the engine compartment, an open platform and the front end driver
cab.

Plasser & Theurer 08-475 Unimat 4S ballast tamper of Kölngleis
working in the western switch area of the new overtaking station Dorsfeld (on
Cologne-Aachen) on 8 August 2001. While the main tamping device is hidden
behind the workers, some other interesting things can be seen. Note the thing
with the two wheels that is hung to the operator cab, i think this is intended
to follow the other rail of a switch to determine it's position. Left to the
cab is another device that is working on the trackbed and a wheelset that might
be for measuring purposes. I'm not an engineer, but i can imagine that tamping
a switch is quite complicated.

The front cab of the Plasser & Theurer 08-475 Unimat 4S ballast tamper of
Kölngleis seen at the new overtaking station Dorsfeld (on Cologne-Aachen)
on 8 August 2001. The different small wheelsets under the cab should be for
measuring purposes. Note there is a warning sign for a laser beam on the side
of the cab, the laser should belong to the measuring equipment, too. Although
this is a modern ballast tamper, it must be at least some years old, as the
adress of the company is written with a four-digit post code that is no more
valid since 1993.

The rear part of the Plasser & Theurer 08-475 Unimat 4S ballast tamper of
Kölngleis seen at the new overtaking station Dorsfeld (on Cologne-Aachen)
on 8 August 2001. Two small wheelsets that should be for measuring purposes can
be seen, one is next to the bogie on the right and the other is under the
two-axled section. The big device further left seems to be intended to reshape
the trackbed, it was not in use here. For travelling against the work direction
there is a driver cab at the rear end.

note the gaps that match with the rails.

Dorsfeld and Horrem it used the left track for an "on the fly" overtaking by
THA 9417 (Paris-Cologne).

A machine for reshaping the trackbed just passed the temporary station of
Sindorf (on Cologne-Aachen) running eastbound on 4 September 2002. Between
Dorsfeld and Horrem it used the left track for an "on the fly" overtaking by
THA 9417 (Paris-Cologne). On the left in the background the green distant
signal of the entrance signal of Horrem is visible, the entrance signal itself
is hard to see. The block signal on the right is green again for RE 10721
(Düren-Münster) that followed the Thalys.
