Hamburg Berliner Tor Hamburg Berliner Tor, S-Bahn station. A DT series 472 S-1 train is departing for Poppenbüttel. This is a branching station for the S-Bahn lines S-1 and S-11 where the S-21 branches off to Aumühle. There is also an U-Bahn station where the U-2 and U-3 intersect by cross-platform transfer, since Berliner Tor's U-Bahn platform has two central platforms on the same level. That is, a passenger on a U-2 heading to Wandsbek-Gartenstadt wanting to transfer to a U-3 train to Mummelmansberg would exit the train at Berliner Tor and go to the other side of the same platform without having to climb stairs or take the elevator/escalator. The same principle would apply to trains for Barmbek and Niendorf Nord. There is another U-2 and U-3 transfer, at Schlump, in the western part of Hamburg. EMU 472 S-Bahn at Hauptbahnhof This is a southbound S21 EMU class 472 train to Aumühle. Class 472 like most other S-Bahn trains, use direct current and third rail, like Berlin's S-Bahn. Hauptbahnhof has two distinct areas for the S-Bahn. The northbound platforms are in a traditional underground station like the U-Bahn, which comes out of tunnel if going by way of Dammtor, and the southbound platforms are on the same level as the national DB / DSB (DMUs to Copenhagen via Lübeck and Oldenburg on Fehmarn) trains. Triple action at Berliner Tor S-Bahn station in Hamburg: a westbound train (class 472/473) on the right hand side of line S31 from Berliner Tor is ready for departure to Altona via Hauptbahnhof (main station) and Dammtor, a S1 train (class 471) in the middle just arrived from Hauptbahnhof (main station) and will depart to Poppenbüttel via Barmbek and Ohlsdorf in a minute and in the distance a train of line S21 (class 472/473) to Aumühle via Bergedorf is running into the elevated grade part of the station.
