Chiemseebahn: The narrow-gauge Chiemsee railway has been linking the main line station at Prien (on the line Munich-Salzburg) and the harbour at Stock since 1887, continuously using the same steam locomotive. This locomotive, now 110 years old, is seen with a train to Prien station on 25 May 1997. Photo and scan: Martin Bienwald <obelix@fim.informatik.uni-mannheim.de> |
The two tracks and the station building of the Chiemsee-Bahn at
Prien, Bavaria, built in 1909. At right the tunnel to the DB station
Prien on the line Rosenheim-Salzburg. The 1000 mm Chiemsee-Bahn was
founded in 1887 and connects the railway station to the port of
Prien/Stock with a line of about 1900 meters. From Stock, ships
depart for the famous castle of Herrenchiemsee and the convent of
Frauenchiemsee. It is the only steamtram in the world which sees
regular service now, but in summer 1998, rumors spread that due to
financial reasons, there would be no service in 1999 any more.

Chiemseebahn, station Prien/Stock: All cars are still the
original ones of 1887. The engine, Krauss No. 1813, got a new
kettle in 1957 (though that one was already built in 1950) and
some minor upgrades, but still runs up to 5000 km per year.
