Scale model of the "Hamburger Bahnhof" in Berlin. The building still
exists, it is an art museum today.

Wooden "railway" from the 16th century, found in 1889 in a Hungarian
gold mine. One of the oldest preserved specimens of a wheel-on-rail
system. Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin, 2002-09-26.

Two examples (with closed cab and with open driver's stand) of the "Breuer
Lokomotor", a very unusual, extremely short diesel shunter. With a
hydraulic mechanism, the shunter can use the weight of the next car to
increase traction. The short length over buffers allows it to stand next
to a cold steam locomotive on a turntable.

Cast-iron angle rails with wagon of the Merthyr Tydfil horse railway
(built 1800). This system was invented in 1778. The wheels had no
flanges. Length of the rails was one yard (0.914 m), weight 27.25 kg.
Track gauge 5 english feet (1.524 m). In 1804, Richard Trevithik's
"Penydarren" steam locomotive was tested on this railway, but as the
rails were too weak for a heavy steam locomotive, it was not taken
into regular service. Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin, 2002-09-26.

Siemens & Halske narrow-gauge electric locomotive (centre rail
pickup) with two small passenger cars. This is a replica of the
"first electric train", a demonstration run on an exhibition in 1879.
Not much later, the first electric tramways were introduced.

T1005 - a very small steam locomotive, I think of the KWStE
(Königlich Württembergische Staatseisenbahn), in
the Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin. I used the program
"Panorama Maker" to put together two photos as it was not
possible to get far enough from the locomotive. 2002-09-26.

Henschel-BBC diesel-electric locomotive 202 003-0 "UmAn". This is one of three experimental diesel-electric locomotives with 3-phase traction motors, built in the 1970s. This one was originally painted orange, later rebuilt with a new drive technology, equipped with a streamlined cab (on the other end) and received a blue/silver striped livery. Sorry for the dark, partial picture - the general problems with railway museums are too little space and too little light. Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin, August 2000.

Berlin - Germany The Deutsches Technikmuseum houses a large collection of locomotives. These are on display in two locomotive sheds around turntables. The sheds are reconstructions of the old depot of the Anhalter freight yard that used to be located here. Deutsches Technikmuseum, 21/04/2002
