Cast-iron angle rails with wagon of the Merthyr Tydfil horse railway (built 1800). This system was invented in 1778. The wheels had no flanges. Length of the rails was one yard (0.914 m), weight 27.25 kg. Track gauge 5 english feet (1.524 m). In 1804, Richard Trevithik's "Penydarren" steam locomotive was tested on this railway, but as the rails were too weak for a heavy steam locomotive, it was not taken into regular service.
