The upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
seen from a point between Horrem and Sindorf, looking east on 29 August 2001.
The southern highspeed track is filled up with ballast and tamped. The old line
is on the right.

This is where the branch line from Horrem to Kerpen crossed the mainline
Cologne-Aachen. The bridge was removed long ago, but the pillars remained. Some
years ago, when the
upgrading project
at the mainline began, the northern pillar and a part of the line next to it
were removed to build two new tracks. Looking from the southern pillar on 1
February 2002, the new tracks and the recultivated remains of the old line
behind them are visible, the old tracks next to the pillar are hard to see.

The upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
seen from the old line to Kerpen west of Horrem on 1 February 2002. On the left
is the old line, which is by now used for all trains and will be used for the
S-Bahn (urban trains) in the future. On the right are the new highspeed tracks,
they seem to be more or less finished.

behind a catenary mast. Note that the acoustic walls are built just around the
highspeed tracks in this area. As the new trainsets for the S-Bahn are very
silent, this should be no problem.

(ABS 4)
with the eastern exit of Horrem in the foreground seen looking towards east on
9 November 2002. On the left are the highspeed tracks with the entrance to
track 7. Next to them is the eastern part of track 3, a siding for freight
trains. The two tracks on the right are intended for the S-Bahn (urban trains).
The entrance signals there can be seen from the back side.

The southern highspeed track is already assembled, for the northern the first
ballast layer is ready in some parts. The old line is on the right.

An old switch drive, seen lying around open at the station of Horrem on 9
November 2002. The electric motor in the background drives the horizontal wheel
in the middle, which operates the rod connection to the tongues. The parts in
the foreground look like electrical switches.
