Transrapid 08 sticking out of the maintenance hall at the TVE
(Transrapid-Versuchsanlage Emsland). As this train has three cars, but the
hall was only built for two-car trains, the end wall was opened and the
track extended outside the hall by a few metres. 6 October 2000.

the maglev system can be repaired or changed from the side of the train.

Transrapid 08 inside the maintenance hall at the TVE. Even though the DBAG
is currently not involved in the Transrapid, the train is painted in ICE
colours, to show how a Transrapid Berlin - Hamburg could look like - but
that project has been cancelled. On top of the roof, you can see the
antennas for various communication systems. 6 October 2000.

Transrapid 08 at the passenger station of the TVE, looking north along
the straight track. On the left you can see transformers and (under the
red roof) braking resistors. Behind, one of the three turnouts connects
the maintenance track to the "mainline".

Transrapid 08 at the passenger station of the TVE. The doors are designed
ICE-like, metal plates cover the gap to the platform. This platform is
much shorter than the train, so only two doors can be used.

Transrapid 08 at the passenger station of the TVE, looking south. An
actual platform of a regular Transrapid system would be longer and have
automatic doors that only open when the train has arrived - so that people
don't fall into the precipice between the platform and the track ....

Transrapid 08 at high speed, going southwards on the straight section of
the north loop of the TVE. Here the train is accelerating from 300 to 400
km/h.
The sound of a passing train is loud and short, but you don't hear it
approaching like a regular train.

The train can transport about 200 passengers in two cars, the
third car is used as a measuring car.

for passengers. 6 October 2000.

Transrapid 08, interior of a 2nd class car. To make the Transrapid an
economical means of transport, high numbers of passengers have to fit into
short trains, so the train has six-abreast seating like a short-distance
jet. The design of the seats reminds more of contemporary regional trains,
however. 6 October 2000.

microphone is 72-year-old Gerd Hugenberg, who has been involved in maglev
trains since the earliest beginnings. 6 October 2000.
