Dresden Suspension Railway cab view Cab view of the Schwebebahn Dresden opened in 1901. It connects the districts of Loschwitz and Oberloschwitz. The Schwebebahn is one of two funicular railways in Dresden, the other being the much more conventional Dresden Cable Car. Both lines are operated by the Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe AG, who also operate the city's tram, bus and ferry networks. Photo taken Sunday 23 June 2013 at the valley station. Dresden Suspension Railway downward view Downward view of the Schwebebahn Dresden, both vehicles visible. The line is 274 metres (899 ft) long and is supported on 33 pillars. It was designed by Eugen Langen, who earlier designed the Wuppertal Suspension Railway, a more extensive suspension railway in Wuppertal. Despite its unusual suspended format, the Dresden Suspension Railway is operated as a conventional funicular railway. The two cars are attached to each other by a cable, which runs around a drum at the top of the incline. The ascending car is pulled up the hill by the weight of the descending car, assisted if necessary by an electric drive to the drum. Photo taken Sunday 23 June 2013. Dresden Suspension Railway driving shaft Old driving shaft used until 1984 exhibited at the mountain station of the Schwebebahn Dresden. The Schwebebahn was not damaged in World War II, but it was out of service from 1984 to 1992 due to reconstruction. In 1990 and 2002, extensive repair works took place and there is now a new lookout point on the roof of the station. Photo taken Sunday 23 June 2013. Photo: Steffen Mokosch (Steffen.Mokosch@web.de) |

One of the old cars of the funicular in Dresden. Originally it had an
overhead wire for the lighting of the cars; for the new generation of
cars this has been replaced by a side power rail. You can also see the
outside luggage platform, which is not present in the cars running
today. Verkehrsmuseum Dresden, 2001-04-27.
