14 March 1997, line Rastatt - Roeschwoog near Rastatt-Wintersdorf,
Germany
The secondary railway line from Rastatt in Germany over the River Rhine to Roeschwoog in France is out of use for through traffic, but can be reactivated for military requirements. This bridge in the closed down part of the line, too low for road vehicles with the full permitted height of 4 m in its original state, was raised on its abutments by inserting distance elements which can be taken out again on short notice to put the track back in a usable condition. View of the bridge from road level from the direction of the village of Wintersdorf.

Road underpass at Wintersdorf (Baden) near Rastatt, June 2000
(former strategic railway Mannheim-Rastatt-Roeschwoog-Haguenau).
The bridge was lifted to allow a bigger headroom for road vehicles.
The railway line could be reactivated within 24hrs for strategic purposes.

Bridge of the former line Rastatt-Roeschwoog in the
Rhine Swamps near Wintersdorf (Baden), June 2000. The bolted and welded
mixed construction presumably indicates a post-war
provisional bridge.

Rhine bridge at Wintersdorf (Baden), June 2000. The bridge is now used
for road vehicles, but the option for railway traffic was kept
theoretically. The three old superstructures,
designed after Engesser's system, originate from the 1890ies.

continous on both sides, the grooves are filled with rubber.
