Cologne's three trademarks, all in one. In this sunny February 1996 photo, a Belgian passenger train, presumably from Brussels, is crossing the long Hindenburg Bridge out of the massive station. Cologne Cathedral's famous spires stick out of the horizon, in the background.

Next to the S-Bahn (suburban railway) stop Köln-Buchforst in the northeast
of Cologne, this new railway bridge is under construction. It will carry the
second track of the line from Köln-Mülheim to Köln Messe/Deutz
(tief), which is single-tracked by now, but has to deal with increasing traffic
since the new highspeed line to Frankfurt is in service (it is part of the
shortest route from Düsseldorf to Frankfurt, which bypasses Köln Hbf).
Three of the tracks between Köln-Mülheim and Köln Hbf (passing
the upper level of Köln Messe/Deutz) are visible in the picture, the fourth
one will be rebuilt in the foreground later. While the existing track to
Köln Deutz/Messe (tief) (covered by the green in the background) crosses
only one of them (entering the line between the two hindmost tracks, which are
intended for trains coming from Mülheim), the new bridge will cross the
three existing tracks, thus the track will enter the line between the first (at
this time missing) and the second track. In order to avoid interfering with the
traffic, the bridge was built besides the line. Later it will be shifted into
the final position above the tracks, then the "left" end will rest on the pillar
visible on the right. The embankment on the bridge building site will be
completed then. In the background on the left, the (much shorter) bridge
crossing the Kalk-Mülheimer-Straße is visible. The picture was taken
from the platform of Köln-Buchforst (note the clock in the upper left
corner) on 10 September 2006.

The crossing of the line Cologne-Wuppertal and the A 3 highway (near the
junction Berliner Straße in Cologne) seen from the east side in the
evening of 7 November 2009. To make room for the widening of the highway, the
bridge carrying the eastern track was replaced by this long truss bridge some
hours before. Although the variable-message signs are still working, the highway
is of course closed, as well as the railway line. The catenary poles behind the
new bridge belong to the western track whose bridge will be replaced later.

Two bridges of the upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
crossing the Hornstraße in Cologne. The old one carries one track of the
main line to Düren/Aachen (the other track is far away in the background)
while the new one is built for the two tracks of the S-Bahn (urban trains). The
S-Bahn line ascends from left to right to cross the main line. Of course the
main line is electrified, but the catenary is hidden behind the new bridge. The
S-Bahn will also be electrified before it is taken into service. Photo taken
from the north side of the line on 30 June 2001.

(ABS 4)
which will lead the S-Bahn (urban trains) from the north side to the south side
of the main line. The bridge is built on the eastern pillar and then pushed
into place. The main line is in the foreground, one track runs along the
S-Bahn, from the other only the catenary is visible. Photo taken from the south
side of the line on 30 June 2001.

The western part of the place where the new bridge on the upgraded line
Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4),
which will lead the S-Bahn (urban trains) from the north side to the south side
of the main line, will be installed. The western pillar and some temporary
pillars are visible. The main line in the foreground is passing by the building
site, it will be realigned later to pass under the bridge and continue on the
north side of the S-Bahn towards Düren. Photo taken from the south side of
the line on 30 June 2001.

the S-Bahn and the freight line will cross the main line at the same point in
different directions and on different levels. Photo taken from the north side

Note the visual differences between the two old parts on the right, which were
rebuilt after the second world war, and the new part on the left, which was
built in the eighties for the S-Bahn (urban trains). A class 423 EMU is
