Former Inter-City train of series 403 in its original livery seen at an exhibition in Berlin in September 1974.
Later on, the 403 units were chartered by Deutsche Lufthansa for the service between the airports of Dusseldorf and Frankfurt.

Class 403 EMU unit, Espenhain One of the three class 403 EMU units, parked on a siding of the former lignite power station at Espenhain. Between February and June 2011 two units of these impressive 70's trainsets were parked at Espenhain, so either 403 001/002 or 403 005/006 is displayed. Class 403+404.1+404.0+403 at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift (Osthavelländische Eisenbahn AG). Three 4-car trains were built 1973 as prototypes for a new generation of Intercity trains for 200 km/h with all wheels powered. They could have served as prototypes for the high speed trains later known as ICE, but no larger series was ordered. The prototypes served as 1st class Intercity trains until 1979, but their capacity was too small for the new two-class system IC'79, so they were used only as special trains from then on, and rebuilt into the "Lufthansa Airport Express" in 1982, and used between the airports of Frankfurt (Main) and Düsseldorf until the Lufthansa gave up these trains. For a long time they stood unused in the DBAG works of Nürnberg, then the Prignitzer Eisenbahn bought the units - now they are stored on a siding of the OHE in Berlin. 2002-04-26. tbk |
Class 403+404.0+404.1+403 at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift (Osthavelländische Eisenbahn AG). A view of the other units, obviously not in running state. It seems that Berlin is not such a great location to store rolling stock of historic importance out in the open. Some parts are missing, such as the doors of the second car in this consist, so to restore a unit in a presentable state, some cars would probably have to be cannibalized. As the paint is peeling, a repaint would be necessary even without the graffiti. 2002-04-26. tbk |
Class 403 at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift. The famous streamlined front, looking fast even when standing. 2002-04-26. tbk |
Class 403 at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift. Close-up on the bogie with pneumatic suspension. This is a unique and complicated construction, which was even equipped with a pneumatic tilting system (up to 2° tilt angle). The tilting did not work and was not used in regular service. 2002-04-26. tbk |
Class 403 at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift. A view of two coupled units. In the service as Lufthansa Airport Express, trains were frequently running in this configuration. Different from most high speed trains of today, the coupler was not hidden under a door. As you can see, the side window of the unit in front is missing. 2002-04-26. tbk |
Class 403 at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift. A view of two coupled units. The trains are coupled with automatic Scharfenberg couplers which also connect the control wires, but not the electric power line which is mounted on the roof, so one pantograph per unit has to be raised. 2002-04-26. tbk |
Class 403/404 at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift. From this perspective, all existing units can be seen: two coupled four-car units in front and the third a little further behind. 2002-04-26. tbk |

(1st class only) before they were rented by the Lufthansa as Airport Express
(Frankfurt-Köln-Bonn).

Class 404.1 (powered middle car of class 403) at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift. This is the dining-car, consisting of a kitchen, a dining area and a seating area with face to face seating (similar to the ARmz 211/217/218). The door is open, impossible to close. The doors of the next car on the left are missing and the openings closed with wooden boards. 2002-04-26. tbk |
Class 404.0 (powered middle car of class 403) at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift. This is the first class open car with an interior much like the Apmz 121/122. Like these, it also has many small windows, one per row of seats. The end cars have regular 6-seat compartments (and one 4-seat compartment). 2002-04-26. tbk |
Class 404.1 (powered middle car of class 403) at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift. A view from another perspective - the kitchen is in the big windowless area next to the door. As you can see, the paint is peeling in several locations. 2002-04-26. tbk |
Class 404 (powered middle cars of class 403) at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift. Short coupling between two cars, also with an automatic Scharfenberg coupler. Even the high voltage roof cable is coupled automatically (each car has its own transformer and control electronics), so it is easy to reconfigure EMU sets. 2002-04-26. tbk |
Class 404.1 (powered middle car of class 403) at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift. Interior view of the face to face seating area in the dining car. Most of it is still intact, it just requires a good cleaning and some small repairs. 2002-04-26. tbk |
Class 404.1 (powered middle car of class 403) at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift. Interior view of the dining area, with fixed seats much like in the ARmz and WRmz dining-cars of the era. 2002-04-26. tbk |
Class 404.0 (powered middle car of class 403) at Berlin-Spandau Johannesstift. This would be a first class open seating car, but all the seats are missing. The curtains, light bands etc. are still there. 2002-04-26. tbk |
