Class 112.1 was built 1992 to 1994 as the last "classic" electric locomotive, based on DR class 143 of 1982 with the speed increased to 160 km/h. Technologically they were outdated, the common order for DR and DB (which later merged into the DBAG) was a political measure to keep the Hennigsdorf works alive (today part of Bombardier), which at the era weren't yet able to use 3-phase AC traction. After some years with IR/IC trains they went to Regio in 2004 and were equipped with destination displays.
The line RE 7 "Rhein-Münsterland-Express" goes hourly from Krefeld via Neuss - Köln - Wuppertal - Hagen - Hamm - Münster to Rheine. Another doubledeck regional express line in Nordrhein-Westfalen.
