The 221 of the DB, built 1963 - 1965, is a variation of the V200 with more powerful motors. It can be distinguished from the V200 by its additional side shutters instead of large windows and its slightly steeper front. As the 221 has a steam heating and no HEP generator, it could not be used for modern passenger trains, also it was more complicated than the 218, so in 1987, the last of them were retired. The female locomotive driver Barbara-Birgit Pirch bought the 221 135-7, repainted it in the original livery and installed new motors. Currently it is maintained in Krefeld and used regularly with special trains, often driven by Ms. Pirch herself. Photo taken out of the cab of the 01 1102! Photo and scan by Tobias B.
