DB 602 003-6, built 1957 by MAN as VT 11 5012, rebuilt 1974 with gas turbine, active until 1978. Installing a gas turbine in four power units allowed to almost double the power from 810 to 1617 kW. The AVCO-Lycoming TF35 gas turbine is otherwise used for helicopters. From 1975 trains with one diesel (601) and one gas turbine power car (602) were operating, but operation was uneconomic and with technical problems, so in 1978 all four gas turbine power cars were taken out of service and only one preserved. DB 602 003-6. Side view showing modifications such as new air intakes and exhaust stack, fuel nozzle, fuel gauge. None of the gas turbine experiments of the 1970s (class 602, 210 and 219) were really successful for the DB. Koblenz-Lützel, 2020-10-03. |
DB 602 003-6. Shortened TEE unit with only two middle cars, one compartment and one central aisle. Koblenz-Lützel, 2020-10-03. |
DB 602 003-6. Scharfenberg coupler with a special transition coupler to be connected to a locomotive (in this case the E41 001). Reportedly this had to be used often, whenever the gas turbine broke down. Koblenz-Lützel, 2020-10-03. |
DB 602 003-6. Immediately recognizable by the big "elephant ear" air intakes interrupting the silver stripe. Koblenz-Lützel, 2020-10-03. |
DB 602 003-6. When used in intercity service 1974 to 1978, an "InterCity" sign covered the TEE sign. Koblenz-Lützel, 2020-10-03. |
DB 602 003-6. Curious kind of fuel gauge with four balls indicating 2900, 3600, 4300 and 5000 liters. The more lightweight gas turbine allowed installing larger fuel tanks, which were also needed due to high fuel consumption. Koblenz-Lützel, 2020-10-03. |
DB 602 003-6. One of the windows was converted to an air intake grille. Koblenz-Lützel, 2020-10-03. |

DB VM11 5122 (1963), one of the additional cars built to form longer trainsets. Rebuilt with emergency exit windows for a working museum unit, which was stopped due to cost overruns. Full number 95 80 0901 122-1 D-DB. Koblenz-Lützel, 2020-10-03. |
DB VM11 5122 (1963), six compartment car for TEE trains. Koblenz-Lützel, 2020-10-03. |
DB VM11 5203 (1957), open plan coach with 11 rows of seats. The end windows were converted to emergency exits for a working museum unit (though the restoration was aborted). Koblenz-Lützel, 2020-10-03. |
DB VM11 5203 (1957), open plan coach with 11 rows of seats for TEE trains. During the 1980s these were equipped with second class seats for higher capacity as Alpen-See-Express, but this car has its original first class seats again. Koblenz-Lützel, 2020-10-03. |
DB VM11 5203 (1957), gangway between two cars with flexible rubber covers for a smooth streamlined exterior. |
DB VT 11 5008 (MAN 1957), regular service until 1987. Refurbished 1993. Plans to reactivate an active set were abandoned 2004 due to cost overruns. New number 95 80 0601 008-5 D-DB. Koblenz-Lützel, 2020-10-03. |
