DB’s VT601 diesel set is a masterpiece of design. Even the train’s headlights are a classic, with their finely shaped, teardrop-like casings. It’s a mystery how the European railway companies allowed such a supreme example of elegance to deteriorate into the sort of boxy machines-on-wheels that we see today. Photo made at the Nurnberg Railway Museum.

A 601 (former VT11.5) south of Fulda. These former TEE and IC railcar sets
were used as special trains for the holiday traffic called "Alpen-See-Express"
(Alps-Sea-Express). Since The end of the 80ies these trains are gone.
Because of the construction of the high speed rail between Fulda and
Würzburg the steel bridge in the background is gone, too.

DB - VT601. After a very succesful period of TEE-service (such as Parsifal Hambourg - Paris), the VT601 took a nap in the then new InterCityNetwork in Germany. The powercars could bear a big InterCity-logo on the front, as seen here at Hambourg Hbf on a Ludwigshafen - Hambourg - InterCitytrain., early autumn 1976.
[Admin's note: Actually, what we see in the picture is a class 602 power car - a 601 with its diesel engine replaced by a gas turbine. They could run in combination with a 601 or another 602 at the other end of the trainset and were recognizable by the modified air intakes. Due to poor reliability and high fuel consumption they did not stay in service very long. - SM] Photo by Jan Agersten (janage@post11.tele.dk) |
