VT10 551i, the only remaining fragment of the highly innovative (but not
very successful) articulated DMUs VT10 of 1953. The VT10 551 was built as a
night train with sleeping cars, in 1956 an additional salon car was built.
In the early 1960s the trains were scrapped, only the salon car (VT10 551i)
was used as an office room. In 1967 it was sold to the Nürnberger
Eisenbahnfreunde and in 1980 moved to its current location near the station
Nürnberg-Stein.

VT10 551i. The VT10 units were the first airconditioned trains in
Germany, built of riveted aluminium alloy. They followed Franz
Kruckenberg's pre-war experiments (and Kruckenberg developed the
single-axle bogies of the daytime train VT10 501, of which nothing
remains). Nürnberg-Stein, 2007-02-03, tobias b köhler |
VT10 551i. As the salon car has no side doors, the entrance is from
the end where the gangway to the next car used to be. Nürnberg-Stein, 2007-02-03, tobias b köhler |
