Diesel multiple unit SVT 137 225, Leipzig Hbf
DRG SVT 137 225 at Leipzig Hbf, track 24. This is one of 13 dieselelectric two-car units which were built in 1935 and 1936 after the success of the first prototype "Fliegender Hamburger". They were used on the lines from Berlin to Hamburg, Köln, Frankfurt (Main), Stuttgart and München, where they were a lot faster than the steam trains of that time, until these express services were stopped in 1939 because of the war. Later the DR used them as inland trains, but also as "Vindobona" Berlin - Wien. The train seen here was used as a salon train for the GDR government until 1975. In 1991 it was repainted in its original colours and used for excursions throughout the 1990s. Photo taken Sunday 1 March 2009.
