On 2000-10-15, the introduction of new DMUs class 642 on the line
Heidenau (near Dresden) - Altenberg (Erzgebirge) was celebrated by
letting everyone travel for free on that line. Here you see the unit
which was shown to the public in Altenberg.

Siemens is building 150 articulated DMUs class 642 for
the DB AG. Delivery was planned to start at the end of
1998, however, they only presented a mock-up of the
cab at the Innotrans fair (October 1998 in Berlin).
Placing the direction indicator (with green LEDs) below
the front window is a new solution, making it more
visible on a "streamlined" front.
