Two types of tilting ICE trains in Dresden Hbf: on track 13 (left), a class 605 diesel train to Nürnberg; on track 14 (right), a class 411 electric train to Frankfurt (Main). The hall of Dresden Hbf is currently being renewed on the other end. 2001-08-23

605+411_2DH.jpg (70273 bytes)

Close up on the two tilting trains. The front of the 411 (foreground) looks the same as the one of the 605 (background), but the DMU can be identified by the exhaust stack and correspondingly dirty roof. 2001-08-23

605+411_3DH.jpg (108897 bytes)

Close up on the two tilting trains. The EMU 411 (foreground) has a tilting pantograph on the end car and high voltage spiral cables between the cars; the DMU 605 (background) has brake resistor grids on the end cars instead. Dresden Hbf, 2001-08-23

DB AG 605 006-6 + 605 106-4 + 605 206-2 + 605 506-5

Dresden Hbf, 4th May 2000

Shortly after being completed, this 200 km/h DMU was parked between tests at the side tracks of Dresden Hbf. Later this year it will go into service on the line Dresden - Nürnberg.

DB AG 506-5 + 605 206-2 + 605 106-4 + 605 006-6

Dresden Hbf, 4th May 2000

On the 1st class end, the coupler door was open. The carbodies are almost the same as for the electric class 411 and 415, except that instead of a pantograph, the end cars have braking resistors on the roof, and the bogies are of type SF 600 by Siemens-SGP (instead of the Fiat Pendolino bogie).

605DH4.jpg (75161 bytes)

DBAG class 605 (train 04) in Dresden Hbf, still not in regular service - but in May 2001, hopefully, it will start service on the line Dresden - Nürnberg at last. 2001-01-26.

605DH5.jpg (52391 bytes)

DBAG class 605 (train 04) in Dresden Hbf, still not in regular service, but doing regular test runs, and perhaps gradually entering services to Nürnberg a few weeks before the new timetable starts ..... 2001-01-26.

605DH6.jpg (63705 bytes)

Atmospheric photo of class 605 in the evening sun in Dresden Hbf, May 2001. By the way, at last these units are running some regular trains to Nürnberg instead of just standing there.

DB AG 506-5

Dresden Hbf, 4th May 2000

A closer view of the train's end. The photographer was involved in the development of this bogie. The SVT era is back. :)

605 206-2

Dresden Hbf, 4th May 2000

Gangway in the middle of the train. Other than the electric ICT, this one of course has no high voltage connections on the roof. Note that the folding step is narrower than the door.

605SF600.jpg (77148 bytes)

Close-up on one of the powered, tilting bogies type SF 600 of class 605. You can see the secondary suspension (pneumatic) with anti-roll bars and dampers below the tilting mechanism, as well as the big rotation damper between the bogie frame and the carbody. Dresden Hbf, May 2001.

605_411_2DH.jpg (126131 bytes)

Here we can see the tilting trainsets of class 605 (diesel-electric, track 13, foreground) and 411 (electric, track 14, background) together in Dresden Hbf (2001-07-10). From this perspective, they look almost identical except for their different bogies.

605_411_DH.jpg (68793 bytes)

DBAG class 605 (foreground) and 411 (background) in Dresden Hbf, 2001-01-26. Both tilt, both look almost the same, but the 605 is diesel and the 411 is electric. Class 605 is still being tested, class 411 is already in regular service to Frankfurt (Main). The bogies are different, and the 411 has a pantograph on the roof, the 605 dynamic brake resistors.

605_614_1.jpg (84650 bytes)

Rare meeting of DB AG DMUs class 605 (left) and 614 (right) in Dresden Hbf, 1 June 2000. The 614 came as an excursion train from Nürnberg, the 605 will go into regular service Dresden - Nürnberg from November 2000 on.

605_614_2.jpg (82600 bytes)

Rare meeting of DB AG DMUs class 605 (left) and 614 (right) in Dresden Hbf, 1 June 2000. This train of class 614 has been modernized (no more baggage doors behind the cab), but repainted in the old "Pop" colours (orange/grey).

605_642_DH.jpg (60202 bytes)

DBAG DMUs in Dresden Hbf: one trainset of class 605 (left) and two sets of class 642 (right). Further behind (not visible from here) is another 605. 2001-02-12.

605_DH19_1.jpg (55147 bytes)

Dresden Hbf, track 19, 2001-02-21: two units of class 605 have just arrived from Nürnberg as ICE 77982 (14:07) and will return to Hersbruck as ICE 77983 at 14:20. These operations are not yet public, just under the conditions of regular service to see whether everything works nicely. In foreground you can see tram tracks and the entrance to the new road tunnel under Wiener Platz.

Dresden Hbf, track 19, 2001-02-21: two units of class 605 are departing as ICE 77983 to Hersbruck (no public service yet).

Dresden Hbf, track 19, 2001-02-21: close-up on the Dellner couplers (system Schaku) between two units of class 605. The train on the right is named "Hans".

605_DH19_4.jpg (49807 bytes)

Dresden Hbf, track 19, 2001-02-21: door of a DMU class 605. Very similar to the electric class 411 and 415, but the exhaust funnel on the roof tells of the slight difference.

605_DH_W.jpg (143215 bytes)

West of Dresden Hbf, 2001-07-10: ICE 1560 "Richard Wagner" (seen from behind), consisting of a double set of class 605, rolls towards Chemnitz - Hof after a punctual departure. From this perspective you can see clearly that the end cars have brake resistors on the roof where class 411 and 415 have a pantograph.

605c_DH.jpg (86021 bytes)

DBAG class 605 in Dresden Hbf with open coupler doors. These trains are now used in a few regular IR trains (in the same timetable) from Dresden to Nürnberg and can be used without supplement until the change of the timetable. 2001-05-02.

hilfskupplung.jpg (110793 bytes)

Dresden Hbf, track 16: Here you see the "emergency coupler" between a diesel-electric locomotive class 234 and a DMU class 605 - it connects to the Scharfenberg coupler of the DMU and to the conventional coupling hook of the locomotive. This is needed to move the train when it is out of order. You can see that the locomotive's buffers have no equivalent on the other side. Also it becomes apparent that the driver of a tilting ICE sits much lower than in a normal locomotive. In the background you see a traffic red locomotive class 143 waiting on the elevated track (connected to track 17). Photo taken from the EMU class 415 on track 14. 2001-07-07.

Two modern DMUs in Dresden Hbf on 2001-01-26. Both are built by Siemens, both are styled by Alexander Neumeister. Class 642 (left) operates local trains between Heidenau and Altenberg with a few through services from Dresden Hbf, class 605 (right) will help speed up the neglected mainline "Sachsen-Franken-Magistrale" to Nürnberg later this year.

Two modern DMUs in Dresden Hbf on 2001-01-26: class 642 (left) and class 605 (right). Behind the 605 you can see the typical pantograph of a CD class 371.
