This is the handle to choose the brake mode, seen at the cab car of RE 10057 to
Bielefeld in Aachen Hbf on 19 October 2001. In vertical position brake mode P
(from Personenzug - passenger train, nowadays more often used on fast freight
trains) is active, the brake weight (Bremsgewicht, an abstract measure of the
braking ability) is 69 tons then. At the moment the handle is set to R (Rapid -
fast train, nowadays used on most passenger trains). For an (at least to me)
unknown reason two brake weights are given. In mode Mg (Magnet) the magnetic
rail brakes would be active. This would allow the train to operate with 160
km/h if it has a loco that is fast enough (actually it was a class 145 at this
train). But the mode Mg cannot be used, it is blocked by a bolt (just left of
the M). I once heard that there are technical problems with the magnetic rail
brakes.

RE 10012 from Bielefeld approaches Aachen Rothe Erde on 11 November 2002. The
destination indicator shows "Aachen Hbf über (via) Essen Hbf". This might
be useful in Hamm or so to determine which route the train will take, but for
passengers boarding behind Essen it's confusing.

RE 10419 to Münster departs from Aachen Hbf on 27 November 2002. The cab
car is one of those with additional windows (for example next to the toilet and
at the rear end) where both staircases to the upper deck are on the same side.

RE 12713 from Rheine approaches Aachen Rothe Erde on 18 December 2002. The RE 7
line, formerly running between Münster and Düren, was extended to
Rheine-Aachen with the timetable change on 15 December 2002. The third of the
four cars contains a ZugCafé (snack bar). At the end a class 111 loco is
pushing.

A double deck train parked near Aachen Hbf on 31 August 2001. The advertising
is new (at least to me) and consists of the word Zug (train), Flug (flight) and
the name of a popular holiday place, on the first car it is Palma (de Mallorca)
and on the second it seems to be Athen. It shall inspire people to use the
train to get to the airport when they fly to their holidays.
