These trains are used as regular IC/ICE trains since the end of the Metropolitan as a separate train category. The end car and the next have been rebuilt to "Traveller" with 2+2 seating and are marketed as second class despite their official designation. As you can see, the Metropolitan has a regular rubber gangway on this end, so it could theoretically be extended with regular rolling stock.
