Wengernalpbahn (JB-WAB) - Switzerland This WAB older motor car is confusingly of class BDeh 4/4, which would mean it is rack-and-adhesion and not rack-only like the rest of the class. 18 motor cars (with driving trailers) have been built from 1947, of which one has been sold, one withdrawn and one modernised. Wengernalpbahn (JB-WAB) - Switzerland Old WAB motor car BDhe 4/4 110 with driving trailer stabled in Kleine Scheidegg, the highest point of the WAB line. Actually there are no through trains, all trains from Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald end in Kleine Scheidegg. Here you can change to the Jungfraubahn, an expensive run which brings you to the highest station in Europe at Jungfraujoch. Kleine Scheidegg, 07-03-2010 Digital photo by Marco van Uden |

BDhe 4/4 power car 102 of the Wengernalpbahn descends from Grindelwald to Grund
on 21 March 2002. This was the view from the livingroom window during our
holiday in the chalet Bärghüttli, the people sitting in the sun are
my parents.

BDhe 4/4 power car 104 of the Wengernalpbahn is parked in Grund on 21 March
2002. It is coupled to the freight cars 301 and 302. These cars are normaly
used to bring goods from Lauterbrunnen up to Wengen, but in the week before the
Snowpenair Concert at Kleine Scheidegg on 23 March, a lot of freight was
brought up to there from Grund. All trains I saw were operated by BDhe 4/4
power cars. They don't have a cab at the other end, so a temporary control desk
is mounted in the compartment. It is used when low cars are pushed, in this
case the cab of the freight car 302 is used.

BDhe 4/4 power car 104 of the Wengernalpbahn is parked at Kleine Scheidegg on
20 March 2002. It came up from Grund with some freight for the Snowpenair
Concert that took place on 23 March. All freight trains I saw on that side of
the network were operated by BDhe 4/4 power cars. They don't have a cab at the
other end, so a temporary control desk is mounted in the compartment. Note that
one bogie of the flatcar is nearer to the end than the other one, all cars of
the Wengernalpbahn have an "upper" and a "lower" end.

BDhe 4/4 power car 106 of the Wengernalpbahn descends from Grindelwald to Grund
on 14 March 2002. Besides the power car, the train consists of a trailer with a
cab and a freight car for the skis. This is one of the trains equipped with
automatic doors. While on the trailer the old doors were modified, new sliding
doors were mounted on the power car. The bagagge door next to the cab is still
operated manually.

BDhe 4/4 power car 113 of the Wengernalpbahn descends from Grindelwald to Grund
on 21 March 2002. This is one of the power cars with new automatic doors and an
electronic display as destination indicator. Shown are the stations Grund,
where the train changes it's direction, and Kleine Scheidegg, where it ends.
Jungfraujoch is written in brackets, it is reached by the Jungfraubahn starting
at Kleine Scheidegg.

A flatcar of the Wengernalpbahn seen at Kleine Scheidegg on 20 March 2002. This
train, moved by a BDhe 4/4 power car, was used to bring freight up from Grund
for the Snowpenair Concert on 23 March. The power car does not have a cab at
this end, so a temporary control desk is mounted in the compartment. During
this shunting movement, the driver used the cab at the other end, where you can
see him leaning out of the window. Note that one bogie of the flatcar is nearer
to the end than the other one, all cars of the Wengernalpbahn have an "upper"
and a "lower" end. On the next track is the BDhe 4/8 EMU 134.

The turning triangle of the Wengernalpbahn at Kleine Scheidegg, seen on 20
March 2002. On the right it is possible to look into the tunnel of one leg, the
other one runs to the left. Every train has an "upper" and a "lower" end, if it
has to change from the Grindelwald side to the Lauterbrunnen side or vice
versa, it has to be turned.

Two seats in a refurbished BDhe 4/4 power car of the Wengernalpbahn seen on 21
March 2002. It is clearly visible that the seat facing the "lower" end of the
car is tilted backwards. Otherwise it would be difficult to stay on it on
inclines up to 25 percent. The picture was taken in the station Grindelwald,
the rackless track in the background belongs to the Berner Oberland-Bahn.

On it's way from Kleine Scheidegg to Lauterbrunnen, train 4 of the
Wengernalpbahn stops at Wengen on 20 March 2002. It consists of a BDhe 4/4
power car, a trailer and a freight car for the skis. The freight car is one of
the very few in this service with a handbrake. The front door of the trailer is
open.

Train 51 of the Wengernalpbahn just left the station Grund and crossed the
Schwarze Lütschine on it's way to Kleine Scheidegg on 21 March 2002. It
consists of a BDhe 4/4 power car, a trailer and a freight car for the skis.

Train 56 of the Wengernalpbahn just left the station Grund towards Grindelwald
on 21 March 2002. It consists of a BDhe 4/4 power car, a trailer and a freight
car for the skis.

Train 57 of the Wengernalpbahn just left the station Grund and crossed the
Schwarze Lütschine on it's way to Kleine Scheidegg on 22 March 2002. It
consists of a BDhe 4/4 power car, a trailer and a freight car for the skis.
Note the pantograph on the trailer. It seems to have no electrical function, I
think it's used to clean the catenary from snow if it is neccessary.

Train 57 of the Wengernalpbahn descends from Grindelwald to Grund on 21 March
2002, with a BDhe 4/4 power car in front. It is followed by the BDhe 4/8 EMU

Bärghüttli where we spent our holiday.

Train 60 of the Wengernalpbahn waits in Grund on 21 March 2002. It consists of
a BDhe 4/4 power car, a trailer and a freight car for the skis. This is one of
the trains equipped with automatic doors. While on the trailer the old doors
were modified, new sliding doors were mounted on the power car.
