Eastern underground concourse in Genève-Cornavin.
• Foreground: stairs to Platform 3, where Track 5 accommodates RER traffic to/from La Plaine and Bellegarde (France). As this area is unrestricted (owing to Swiss internal traffic), Immigration and Customs checks are carried out on board, on a random basis; • Background: "France" panel, which indicates entry to the French sector (Platform 4, Tracks 7-8), for all non-RER traffic to/from France. This area is restricted and cordouned off in the same style as Eurostar Terminals, with routine ground checks. Genève-Cornavin. 17th June 2005.

This is still the public area, with the Departures lanes, where passengers leaving Geneva to France go through Immigration and Customs checks. Signs inform that doors open 30min ahead of any departure. In practice, these often remain open. Genève-Cornavin. 17th June 2005.

Entry to the French sector (Platform 4, Tracks 7-8), still in the public area.
As various posters warn that Trains bound for France will LEAVE ON TIME and wait for late-comers under no circumstances, passengers are advised to show up AT LEAST 10MIN IN ADVANCE, so as to leave enough time for Customs and Immigration checks. Then no wonder that at 7:05pm, there was already a lengthy queue for TGV 6584, leaving to Paris at 7:23pm... Genève-Cornavin. 17th June 2005.

One can spot quite easily the passenger lounge (restricted area), beneath the tracks where TER 96562/3 was awaiting departure to Lyon-Perrache. The whole of these dedicated facilities dates from 1984, and was built as an extension under the remodelling required by the construction of the Railair link. Genève-Cornavin. 2nd November 2004.

French sector (Platform 4, Tracks 7-8), seen from Platform 3.
This sector was built in 1984, as an extension under the remodelling required by the construction of the Railair link. Hitherto, traffic to/from France had been accommodated at Platforms 2 and 3, in rather unsatisfactory conditions, as it was mixed with Swiss internal traffic. The Class 72500 DMU on Track 7 was awaiting departure on TER 96624/3 to Valence-Ville (via Grenoble). Genève-Cornavin. 2nd November 2004.

This pic was made from Platform 3, which, as Platforms 1 and 2 (further left), is dedicated to Swiss internal traffic. Traffic to/from France is accommodated at Platform 4 (further right), where one can spot a Class 72500 DMU (Track 7). Genève-Cornavin. 2nd November 2004.

Platform 4 (Tracks 7-8) stands further left, and accommodates non-RER traffic to/from France. Whereas Tracks 1-4 are single-voltage (15kV 16.7Hz AC), all other tracks (5-8) are convertible (15kV 16.7Hz AC or 1.5kV DC). Genève-Cornavin. 2nd November 2004.

Tracks (West end) in Genève-Cornavin, looking towards the Airport, France and La Praille.
This pic was made from Platform 3, between tracks 5 and 6. Tracks 7-8 (Platform 4) stand further right, and accommodate non-RER traffic to/from France. Whereas Tracks 1-4 (further left) are single-voltage (15kV 16.7Hz AC), all other tracks (5-8) are convertible (15kV 16.7Hz AC or 1.5kV DC). Further behind, Traffic to/from France (RER and non-RER) then runs on the most right-hand track (1.5kV DC only). Traffic to/from the Airport uses the 2 middle tracks (15kV 16.7Hz AC only), whereas that to La Praille/Lancy-Rouge runs on the left-hand track (15kV 16.7Hz AC only). Genève-Cornavin. 17th June 2005.
