In 1994 class 4090 was built as a prototype for the renewal of the rolling stock on the electrified Mariazellerbahn. Two trains were delivered: one 4090+7090+7090+4090 that could be used on the entire line St. Pölten - Mariazell, one 4090+7090+6090 that was restricted to the flat section St. Pölten - Laubenbachmühle. The carbodies have a special shape to allow more width and wider seats for passengers. Due to technical problems some of the cars were out of service for years. After delivery of the new "Himmelstreppe" units ET1 to ET9 in 2013, the 4090 prototypes were not needed any more and sold to Salzburg AG / Pinzgauer Lokalbahn in 2015. The line from Zell am See to Krimml is not electrified, the cars will be rebuilt and used to extend the capacity of the diesel trains. Here you see three cars (4090, 6090, 7090). Zell am See / Tischlerhäusl, 2016-01-17.
