Withdrawn former 1st/2nd class ÖBB cars Bmpz 50 81 20-34 210-2 (left) and 200-3 (right). They belong to one of the first series of the so called Mitteleinstiegswagen (central entrance cars), which were built in the 1960s for Austrian regional traffic. The 1st class parts were downgraded to 2nd class later (probably in the early 1990s), but still retained their original interior. These two cars were parked on a side track near the station of Neunkirchen/NÖ from April until July 2004 and already strongly damaged by vandalism. This picture was taken on 23 May 2004. ÖBB middle entrance car for local trains. Other than the "Schlieren"
cars which were originally intended for all domestic trains, fast and
slow, these cars seemed to be intended specifically for commuter
trains, as can be seen from their higher number of doors.

Label at the side of withdrawn former 1st/2nd class ÖBB Mitteleinstiegswagen (central entrance car) Bmpz 50 81 20-34 210-2. Before the 1st class part was downgraded to 2nd class, the car had the number ABmpz 50 81 30-34 010-?. At a closer look, one can see that the "2" of "20-34", which was put on later, is placed a little bit higher than the other numbers, and that the "A" of "ABmpz" was just removed. Two labels underneath the central entrance of withdrawn former 1st/2nd class ÖBB Mitteleinstiegswagen Bmpz 50 81 20-34 200-3 tell us a bit about the history of this car: It was built (as the first of its series) by ÖBB-Hauptwerkstätte (main workshop) St. Pölten in 1962 with serial number 1371 and originally had the class number 22720 (crossed out meanwhile). In 1968 it was replaced by the UIC number 50 81 30-04 000-?. After a brake upgrade (between 1971 and 1974) it was approved for 140 km/h, and therefore the number was changed anew to 50 81 30-34 000-5, which can (partially) still be read on the label. When finally the 1st class part was downgraded to 2nd class (probably in the early 1990s), it got its last number 50 81 20-34 200-3. Neunkirchen/NÖ, 23 May 2004. Photo: Ambros Wernisch
