ciwl-cook.jpg (65635 bytes)

This picture, named for the Russian cook visible in the door of the right car, shows the CIWL Pullman coaches No. 4152D and No. 4080 DE. You can see the diaphragms, the typical doors and the oval toilet windows. Tobel-Affeltrangen, 3rd February 1995.

ciwl-diaphragm.jpg (116753 bytes)

In the Nostalgie-Istanbul-Orient-Express, the diaphragms are lined with blue velvet and a blue carpet. This makes the passage between two cars very pleasant. I didn't find out whether this was already done in the early time of these cars or is an idea of the Reisebüro Mittelthurgau. 3rd February 1995.

ciwl-door.jpg (67169 bytes)

The wooden doors with oval windows, opening to the inside, are a typical design element of many Pullman- and sleeping-cars of the CIWL. The door is closed with a handle and an additional bolt. Photo taken in Pullman car WSP Cote d'Azur No. 4152 D, 3rd February 1995.

ciwl-toilet.jpg (51298 bytes)

The toilets of CIWL coches are small, but no less carefully designed than the rest of the coach. There has even been an expensive replica edition of the water taps. You can also see how the ventilation works: a small semi-circle in the center of the window can be turned to the according position. Photo taken in Pullman car WSP Cote d'Azur No. 4152 D, 3rd February 1995.

ciwl-window.jpg (56153 bytes)

Another typical design element of CIWL Pullman cars are the oval `Pullman windows' in the toilet and in the corridor on the other side. Photo taken in Pullman car WSP Cote d'Azur No. 4152 D, 3rd February 1995. Above the window is a drawing of the coach with seat numbers, below you see a table for the conductor.
