In the beginning of the 1990s the coaches of the Royal Train (3 coaches) had to
be replaced. They were not suited for international travel - that required a
maximum speed of at least 160km/h - anymore. It was decided to rebuild one
coach of the ICR type for Her Majesty. More coaches of the ICR class could be
added to form a "Royal Train" if necessary.
Talbot in Aachen, Germany (that also built the coach) reconstructed ICR first
class coach 50 84 10-70 647. The new Royal coach has two bedrooms with two beds
each and a small desk. These bedrooms also have a small bathroom attached. The
large saloon in the center of the coach has a large table with 6 chairs, 4
comfortable large seats, a small 2-person bench and two small tables. There is
also a kitchen available, with next to it a small bedroom for staff.
The livery of the royal coach is dark blue, with two small yellow bands above
and underneath the window. in the lower yellow band a small blue crown can be
found. The coach is normally stabled in Utrecht, maintenance is performed in
Zwolle.
The Royal coach is not only intended for Her Majesty, also the gouvernment is
allowed to use the coach (just like the Royal airplane). One of the first
passengers of the coach was the Polish president Walesa during his visit to The
Netherlands. The Queen has used her coach at least once to travel from The
Netherlands to Austria for holidays, and on her 60th birthday (31/01/98) she
took the Royal Train (with many friends and relatives) from Amsterdam to
Apeldoorn. But normally the coach is just standing quietly in its shed....
